Residents of Shaver Springs in Fresno County say their drinking water is not safe and are calling on the Fresno County Board of Supervisors to take action.
But Fresno County Supervisor Nathan Magsig refuted some of those claims on Tuesday, showing a video of himself drinking water from four wells in Shaver Springs.
The backstory: Shaver Springs residents have reported discolored water, saying they are unable to shower every day because of it and have to buy bottled water.
Fresno County held a community meeting last month and said that officials have met with the state and confirmed that the water is potable.
Shaver Springs’ water system is operated by Waterworks District 40, which is governed by the Board of Supervisors.
The county issued three water quality violation notices in July, August and September for high levels of gross alpha, uranium and manganese in the water. With those warnings, the county said there is not an immediate risk to public health and said a state-funded consultant has been assigned to help find long-term solutions.
What they’re saying: Members of the public spoke during Tuesday’s Board of Supervisors meeting, accusing Supervisor Nathan Magsig – who represents the area – of refusing to drink water presented to him at the community meeting last month.
One person brought a cup of water he said was from a tap at Shaver Springs to Tuesday’s meeting.
Magsig responded by saying he drank from four Shaver Springs wells last month and showed four videos of him doing so.
In the videos, Magsig is seen drinking the water and noting that he tasted iron.
“I said I would drink from every source,” Magsig said on Tuesday. “I believe some of the homes that are in Shaver Springs have issues with their pipes within the home, and that’s causing this additional discoloration.”
Magsig added, “I am not saying that the water is pure. It is not. There are issues with gross alpha, uranium. There are issues with manganese. There’s issues with iron, and the county is working hard to get those things cleaned up.”
