A 30-year-old Modesto man is suspected of a fatal hit-and-run that killed a 73-year-old woman in Manteca, according to police.

The Manteca Police Department said officers responded to a report of a pedestrian being hit by a vehicle in the 800 block of West Lathrop Road around 5:49 a.m. on Sept. 18.

A witness said the driver of the car got out of the vehicle but then drove away, police said. The woman was taken to the hospital where she died of her injuries.

Police said the woman did not appear to have been in a crosswalk when she was hit. Police said she was walking home from a church.

The driver in the crash was identified and interviewed by police on Tuesday, police said. Police added that his car was seized as evidence, but he has not been arrested.

An arrest hasn’t been made to allow the investigation to determine what happened and what charges can be made, police said.

Police said investigations on such collisions require analysis to determine the cause of the crash, such as damage to the car, victim’s injuries, driver’s statement, data from the car’s electronics, scene evidence and witness accounts.

Once the investigation is complete, police said it will be forwarded to the San Joaquin County District Attorney’s Office.

Anyone who witnessed the crash is urged to contact police at 209-456-8101.
