Re “Deficits might wipe out a third of MTS bus routes” (Sept. 18): As if things aren’t bad enough. Developers are getting approvals to build apartment complexes with little or no parking from here to Temecula. Everyone is supposed to take public transportation. Now this!
We had better pray for a state bailout or bite the bullet and approve a sales tax increase. This situation must be addressed!
— Maggie Conway, Sorrento Mesa
The purpose of MTS’ subliminal proposal to reduce bus and trolley service is quickly unveiled by a following paragraph offering a solution by approving a sales tax increase in 2028. This ignores the evidence that public transportation patronage is increasing. It also ignores the strategies to promote housing infill where there is frequent transit service. These reductions would disqualify many of the areas approved for higher densities and would default on prior approvals.
It is a basic premise that public transit is not designed to create revenue and must be subsidized. MTS and city leaders are playing games in a very obvious effort to cover up the economic impact of ongoing mismanagement of their properties and services. Now they are wasting time and money to concoct fantasies aimed at scaring the public into forgiving their incompetence with more taxes.
