BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — A five-year-old child suffered severe injuries in a hit-and-run collision in southeast Bakersfield Thursday afternoon.
At around 2:05 p.m., a woman was driving westbound with her kids inside the vehicle. She was preparing to make a southbound turn in the area of Tyree Toliver and Wilkins streets, according to the Bakersfield Police Department.
Another vehicle — a truck with two occupants — ran a southbound stop sign, broadsiding the vehicle on the passenger side, police said.
The child is in critical but stable condition, according to BPD, and is being airlifted to Valley Children’s Hospital in Madera.
The woman was not at fault as there was no stop sign on Wilkins Street.
Both occupants in the truck fled the scene, according to officials. BPD has the passenger in custody but is still looking for the driver as of Thursday evening.
