Re “County leaders push to fast-track an airport trolley or people mover in San Diego” (Sept. 18): The article on the transit center concept revived my dream of taking the Coaster from North County to the airport to avoid the cost of airport parking or paying for a ride. Wouldn’t it be wonderful to have MTS buses, the San Diego Trolley system, and the Coaster all converging on a transit center, which then whisks passengers on an underground people mover directly to the airport? A 21st-century system to enable the 25 million travelers who pass through the airport each year to access it efficiently and inexpensively is long overdue.
Could 30-year bonds, to be amortized by a small fee on airline fares in and out of San Diego, be issued? A fee which generated $2 per passenger per flight would generate $50 million per year, or $1.5 billion over 30 years.

There is already dedicated bus service from Old Town to the airport. Has anyone approached Navy officials about incorporating improved connections for their massive NAVWAR project with Old Town transit and the airport? Seems like it would benefit them and be a blip in their budget.
Give buses from the airport to Santa Fe Depot traffic signal priority and raised platforms (people seem to greatly prefer that) for now.
Longer term? Build a new pier straight out Harbor Island Drive from the airport, and water taxi service can land at the foot of Broadway and behind the Convention Center at existing facilities. Surely SANDAG could at least figure out how to cover that distance. Maybe Topgolf would like to be a sponsor.
