OAKLAND — Four residents including a child were injured and some others rescued in a three-alarm fire early Friday that left an East Oakland apartment building uninhabitable,  officials said.

About 70 residents were displaced, including 10 minors, officials said.

The fire started about 12:43 a.m. Friday at a four-story, 21-unit apartment building in the 5100 block of Bancroft Avenue.

Smoke and flames were coming from all four floors when firefighters first got to the scene and a third alarm was called within minutes, Fire Chief Damon Covington said.

Firefighters had to rescue several residents while others were able to get out on their own.

Sixty-five firefighters responded to the blaze which was declared under control at 1:54 a.m.  No firefighters were injured.

Four residents including three adults and a 9-year-old child, were hospitalized for smoke inhalation and other injuries. Their conditions were not immediately available.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Damage to the building was extensive and it was “red-tagged” by city officials meaning it was uninhabitable.

Officials were looking to set up a temporary shelter for those displaced until other housing could be found for them. The Red Cross was also assisting.
