Starbucks is set to close 250 stores across the United States and Canada in the coming days, part of what CEO Brian Niccol says is a continuation of the brand’s “Back to Starbucks” strategy first debuted in 2024. In a letter to employees posted on the company’s website, Starbucks Chief Operating Officer Mike Grams said that his team has “identified locations where we do not believe we can consistently deliver the experience we want for customers and partners or where we don’t see a path to acceptable financial performance.”
The letter, however, did not formally list the 250 locations slated for closure. So, instead, social media sleuths got to work. Eventually, a Starbucks superfan who uses the legal mononym Winter compiled a spreadsheet of closing stores, using what others had been seeing on the Starbucks app: hundreds of locations that show as closed in the coming week.
Winter’s spreadsheet lists 64 California locations that appear to be slated for closure, ranging from San Diego to Santa Rosa and beyond. And while locations in many Bay Area cities, including Millbrae, San Jose and San Carlos, appear on the list, there are no locations listed in San Francisco proper.
A spot-check of California locations from the list by SFGATE, using the same app methodology, finds the same results: each California store’s listed business hours show only as closed in the coming days. Reached for comment, Starbucks declined to confirm the list of California closures, saying only that “coffeehouses that are closing will have signage up this weekend to notify customers.”
