In September 2025, Starbucks announced that it was closing 627 stores in North America and Europe. That wave included 43 locations all over the Bay Area, according to KTVU. In his letter, Grams said the company is aiming for faster service, and “warmer, more welcoming coffeehouses.”

Despite the closures, Grams said that the company still plans to open more locations. “We are actively developing a strong pipeline of new coffeehouses and remain committed to growth in North America,” he said.
