Explore Outdoors: It’s not a bird or a plane. It’s a flying RV!

Mike TeSelle

It’s a bird. It’s a plane. It’s definitely not Superman!

What is it?

It’s a unique, whimsical and otherworldly piece of art that is part of Sacramento’s Southside Park.

If you’ve never seen “Port of Call: Earth,” a 20-foot-tall creation by artist Joe Scarpa, then a trip to this spot is a must-see.

The public art is described as a vintage Curtiss Wright/Airstream-style travel trailer on a pole angled skyward, as if on takeoff or landing.

But words can’t really describe the curiosity that awaits the eye.

After all, it’s not just the visual of a flying RV suspended above the ground. There are also aliens. Tiny aliens. Lots of them.

And, they appear to be fishing and dangling and doing whatever.

The park itself is even home to the Universal Universe Playground, which has two age-appropriate play areas.

One is called Tadpole Galaxy. The other is Spaceship Explore.
