OAKLAND — A woman who died Wednesday from fatal injuries after she was found unconscious on the Embarcadero was the victim of a hit-and-run collision, authorities said Friday.

The coroner’s bureau was trying to confirm the woman’s name on Friday and her place of residence. She is believed to be between 25 and 35.

The woman was found with head and other injuries about 2 p.m. Wednesday in the 1700 block of Embarcadero, a mostly commercial area. She was taken to a hospital where she died.

The death was initially classified as suspicious and was preliminarily investigated by the homicide unit.

But a subsequent autopsy determined the woman’s injuries were consistent with someone struck by a vehicle and the case has been turned over to traffic investigators.

Police are trying to determine what the woman was doing in the area. Investigators believe she was struck by a vehicle going eastbound on Embarcadero but do not have a description so far of the vehicle or the driver.

Investigators are seeking any witnesses or video that might assist in the investigation. Anyone with information may call traffic investigators at 510-777-8570.
