Family and friends gathered Friday night to remember 15-year-old Tyana Jones, two weeks after she was struck by a vehicle at a south Sacramento intersection and later died.

Loved ones returned to Bruceville and Calvine roads, where Jones was hit on Sept. 11.

Her mother told KCRA 3 that she spoke with Jones just after 4:30 p.m. that day. The teenager told her she was heading to a football game.

Later that evening, Sacramento police responded to Bruceville and Calvine roads after Jones was struck by a vehicle. She was taken to a hospital, where she died two days later, on Sept. 13.

At Friday night’s vigil, Jones’ family remembered her as an outgoing teenager who loved to dance, rap, and play basketball. Her mother described her as the family’s “energizer bunny.”

Sacramento police said the driver remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators. Police said DUI did not appear to be a factor.

KCRA 3 also asked whether speed played a role. Police did not directly answer that question, saying the investigation remains ongoing.

As of Friday, police said no one had been cited or arrested.
