An elderly Berkeley woman has died after her Poet’s Corner home caught fire Friday evening.

The fire was centered around a microwave in the home’s kitchen and that another person living in the home escaped uninjured.

Firefighters first went to a home in the 2400 block of Browning Street around 9:35 p.m. Friday after 911 callers reported there and someone still inside, Berkeley Fire Department Deputy Chief Keith May said in an email Saturday.

The two-story building was engulfed in flames and smoke when they arrived; some firefighters brought the woman out of the building while others worked to put out the fire, May said.

The woman was hospitalized in critical condition as of Saturday, but on Thursday, BFD confirmed she had died. Fire and other officials did not immediately provide other details, including when the woman died or which hospital had treated her.
