Kaiser Permanente will lay off 147 employees across several California cities, including Oakland and Pleasanton, effective Nov. 20, the health care provider said in state regulatory filings this month.

The workers are in business and administrative functions and do not affect patient care, Kaiser said.

“Kaiser Permanente continually evaluates how we organize our work and deploy resources to help ensure high-quality care remains affordable and accessible for our members and patients,” a statement from the Oakland-based health giant said.

The bulk of the layoffs, involving 72 people, will be at the provider’s San Diego administrative offices, followed by 22 positions in Pleasanton, 20 in Pasadena and 11 in Oakland. The remaining are spread throughout Los Angeles, Irvine, Folsom, Corona and Sacramento.

“We recently notified 147 employees in a number of business and administrative functions that their positions will be eliminated,” the statement said. “These positions do not provide direct patient care. We are supporting affected employees as they explore other opportunities within Kaiser Permanente and, where appropriate, providing severance, career support and outplacement services. These changes will not affect the quality of care or service we provide to our members and patients.”

Kaiser announced in October it had cut more than 200 positions across 15 hospitals and clinics in California, the latest in a series of layoffs last year that affected nearly every department. The health giant said at the time that the moves were part of ongoing efforts to “rebalance resources” and adapt to changing patient volumes and rising costs.

Kaiser has about 183,000 employees in California. The health system serves 9.6 million members in the state and about 13 million nationwide.
