A San Diego Central Jail inmate died over the weekend after going into medical distress, authorities said Monday.

The 62-year-old man became disoriented for unknown reasons in a communal room at the detention center shortly before 2:30 p.m. Sunday, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

“He was immediately escorted to the facility’s medical clinic for evaluation,” Lt. Juan Marquez said. “While in the clinic, (he) went into medical distress, prompting medical staff and deputies to initiate lifesaving measures.”

Paramedics then took the man to a hospital, where he died about 9:15 p.m. The Medical Examiner’s Office will determine the cause and manner of death.

“A sheriff’s family-liaison officer has been assigned to support the family during this difficult time,” Marquez said.

The man, whose name was withheld pending family notification, had been in custody since last November, facing charges of assault with a deadly weapon, issuing criminal threats and resisting arrest.

Sheriff’s homicide detectives will investigate the death, which is protocol for all in-custody deaths. The Citizens’ Law Enforcement Review Board has also been notified of the incident.
