An East Village man is dead after a fall from his sixth-floor balcony Sunday afternoon.

Was he pushed? Did he jump? So far police aren’t sure.

Idea1 Apartments are tucked into hustle and bustle of heavy East Village traffic and many times sidewalks are crowded on 13th and F Streets. Sunday at 2:30 p.m. was no exception.

“We were terrified. We were absolutely terrified. We had no idea what was going on,” witness Isabella Boaden said.

Boaden lives in the same building and began recording from her own balcony.

“It was a black tarp covering a body. Then a whole bunch of gloves everywhere. Devices they were trying to use to revive him,” Boaden said.

“Absolutely shocked. One — that it happened and that it happened in the middle of the afternoon, “ witness Brittney Atkinson said.

Atkinson, who wished not to appear on camera, was recording from across the street.

“You never know what people can do and that kind of makes me worry,” Atkinson said.

Police have not identified the victim. The man fell six stories from this Idea1 balcony to the street below. Witnesses say he had serious head injuries and despite first responder efforts, he could not be saved.

At the time, witnesses say there was another man in the apartment, but he wasn’t there when NBC 7’s Dave Summers dropped by.

Officers from the San Diego Police Department immediately responded to the apartment complex. They deployed a drone to take a look at that balcony. They tried to get inside and were arguing with the man in the apartment.

The confrontation at the front door was captured on security video found inside the complex and across from the apartment.

“They were screaming at the guy inside armed and with a dog. Telling him to come out release the gun. They knew he was armed,” Boaden said.

“Hostile. He did not want to open the door. He was cursing at them using f-words and all kinds of things,” Atkinson said.

Atkinson says there is more.

“A couple of times, I did hear him say die, die, die while they were trying to resuscitate the individual,” Atkinson said.

At last check, police had made no arrests. Homicide detectives are for now calling it a suspicious death.

Witnesses say the victim landed on the street between two parked cars. Three people nearby went to him, then pulled the victim onto the sidewalk before first responders arrived.
