OAKLAND, Ore. – Firefighters stopped a 7-acre grass fire near the 1300 block of Hogan Road in Oakland on Sunday, Sept. 27, according to Douglas Forest Protective Association officials.

The DFPA said Wildfire camera detection operators with the Douglas Forest Protective Association spotted a smoke column around 1:19 p.m. Firefighters arrived to find a 3-acre grass fire moving uphill, according to DFPA. Three engines quickly stopped the fire from spreading further. The fire grew to 7 acres before crews contained it.

Mop-up operations are complete and the fire is now in patrol status. Investigators determined the fire was human-caused and the investigation continues.

No homes or structures were threatened.

DFPA responded to multiple violations of public use restrictions throughout the weekend, including prohibited debris burning. Fire season remains in effect with restrictions still in place across the Douglas District.

Recent rain and cooler temperatures allowed fire danger to drop to low with Industrial Fire Precaution Level 1 restrictions currently in effect, according to DFPA. But low fire danger does not mean no fire danger.

Debris burning, including burn barrels, open fires and campfires except at designated locations, remains restricted. Violations can result in citations and fines.

People responsible for unauthorized fires that escape, cause damage or require firefighting resources may be held liable for property damage and suppression costs. Violations are tracked statewide and can follow someone for at least five years.
