SYLMAR, LOS ANGELES (KABC) — Several lanes of the Northbound 5 Freeway were shut down in Sylmar after a semitrailer reportedly transporting produce caught on fire.

The vehicle fire was reported just before 8 p.m. near Roxford Street. The incident led to authorities initially closing all lanes of the northbound 5 Freeway in the area.

A SigAlert was issued effectively closing all lanes for at least 30 minutes while crews worked to clear the roadway, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Just before 9 p.m., the CHP said the carpool lane and the #1 lane were open. Around 11:38 p.m., CHP said four lanes would be shut down for approximately six hours.

AIR7 flew over the scene as firefighters were putting out the flames. It looked like the semitrailer was a complete loss.

The incident created a traffic jam. Motorists were asked to avoid the area and use alternate routes.

No further information was immediately known.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
