A 20-year-old Detroit man and a 19-year-old Troy woman are in police custody in connection with a shooting Sunday night in Royal Oak.

According to the Royal Oak Police Department, the Detroit man is suspected of opening fire, hitting their vehicle shortly after 8:30 p.m. No injuries were reported.

Police said two women reported their car was struck by gunfire near the intersection of East Fifth Street and Williams Street after one of them said they had been involved in a physical altercation with another woman. They were reportedly trying to leave when a man shot at them, hitting their vehicle which was unoccupied at the time, police said.

Investigators recovered several empty shell casings at the scene, police said.

As an investigation continues, it’s believed the shooting was a targeted incident with no threat to the public, police said.

A collaborative effort between the Royal Oak Police Department and the Troy Police Department’s special investigations unit led to the arrest of the two suspects. They are held at the Royal Oak Police Department pending a review of the incident by the Oakland County Prosecutor’s Office.

“Fortunately, no one was seriously injured or killed,” Royal Oak Police Chief Michael Moore stated in a news release. “Thanks to some outstanding collaboration and hard work by our investigators, these dangerous suspects were quickly identified and arrested before they could harm anyone else.”

Anyone with further information on the incident is asked to contact the Royal Oak Police Department’s criminal investigations division at 248-246-3515.
