Re “Trump hosts Xi for talks at White House” (Sept. 25): President Trump’s rolling out the welcome mat for Xi Jinping couldn’t have been more ostentatious. He not only met Xi and his wife when they flew into Joint Base Andrews, but he arranged an elaborate military review to impress the Chinese dictator.

Funny how Trump charms our greatest adversary with such munificence while berating our closest ally, Canada, and its leader, Prime Minister Mark Carney, with both personal and diplomatic disdain. He called Canada “one of the worst countries in the world to deal with” and dissed Carney by calling him “governor.” And to add insult to injury, he renamed Lake Ontario “Lake America.”

Perhaps Trump is only trying to fulfill Jesus’ command to “love your enemies.” But nowhere in the Gospels are we told to treat our friends with contempt. What kind of president kowtows to a Chinese dictator while demeaning our closest neighbor? Alas, we all know the answer to that question.
