A California Highway Patrol officer died following an on-duty crash in Tulare County on Monday, according to authorities.

CHP said Brian Liles died in a motorcycle crash on Highway 99, just north of Highway 190 near Tipton. Liles died from his injuries despite life-saving measures. He was 44 years old.

Liles served as an officer with CHP for 16 years, the agency said. It’s the first line-of-duty death for the CHP since 2020, according to the governor’s office.

“Officer Brian Liles dedicated his life to serving our communities, and his passing is a heartbreaking loss for the California Highway Patrol and the entire state of California,” Gov. Gavin Newsom said in a statement. “Jennifer and I are deeply saddened by his tragic loss and we extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and CHP colleagues. He will be remembered for his dedication to serving and protecting the people of California.”

According to the governor’s office, Liles was assigned to the San Jose Area in 2010 after graduating from the CHP Academy. He was also a CHP officer in the communities of Hayward and Fresno before transferring to the Visalia Area office in 2019.

Liles is survived by his wife, two children, his parents and two sisters.

Newsom said flags at the State Capitol and Capitol Annex Swing Space would be flown at half-staff in honor of Liles.

A bell toll ceremony will take place at the CHP Academy in West Sacramento on Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. It will be broadcast to law enforcement agencies across the state.
