A Macomb County man who had been arrested as a suspect in the Sept. 19 fatal shooting of another Macomb County man in Pontiac is no longer in police custody as an investigation continues, officials said.
Deputy Tyler Sweers, Oakland County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson, told The Oakland Press that the suspect, a 31-year-old St. Clair Shores man shot in the leg during the incident, was released from custody pending further investigation.
Sweers identified the fatal shooting victim as Paul Stanley Urbas, Jr. of Mount Clemens.
As previously reported, the sheriff’s office said the incident stemmed from a dispute over a woman — a “domestic-related confrontation involving the deceased, his estranged wife and the man taken into custody.”
The shootings took place in the 50 block of Monroe Street, northeast of the M-59/ Telegraph Road intersection, near the Webster Community Center. Deputies responded there at approximately 7:15 p.m. on a report of a domestic disturbance, and dispatchers said they heard gunshots in the background during the 911 phone call, the sheriff’s office said.
Urbas, pronounced dead at the scene, was shot multiple times, the sheriff’s office said. The St. Clair Shores man was taken into custody and transported to an area hospital for treatment of a gunshot wound to the leg, the sheriff’s office said, and had been under guard there.
Investigators said several children were present during the shooting but not physically injured.
The Oakland Press will report further on this case when more information becomes available.
As stated in his obituary, Urbas — known as PJ — “was a kind-hearted man, a dedicated worker, and, above all, a loving and devoted husband and father. His family was the center of his world, and nothing brought him greater joy than the time he spent with his children.”
Urbas is survived by his wife, two young sons, two stepdaughters, his parents and seven siblings.
