HIGHLAND PARK, LOS ANGELES (KABC) — Police responded to Benjamin Franklin High School in Highland Park on Wednesday to investigate a death that prompted the campus to be placed on lockdown.

The death was reported shortly after 1 p.m. at the school in the 800 block of North Avenue 54. A white tent was set up at the scene.

The Los Angeles Unified School District said the campus was placed on lockdown as authorities responded.

“The safety and wellbeing of our students and staff continues to be our top priority. A medical emergency has required our school to go into a ‘lockdown.’ A ‘lockdown’ means that all gates and doors in the entire school are locked,” an LAUSD spokesperson said.

“The campus will remain on ‘lockdown’ until law enforcement gives the ‘all clear’ to re-open the campus. All procedures are being implemented according to District policy. In addition, our staff is well trained and regularly reviews safety procedures. We will continue to keep you informed throughout this process. We thank you in advance for your cooperation and patience.”

It appears the lockdown has since been lifted.

Police have not said whether the death involved a student.

Additional details about the death investigation were not immediately available.
