SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Jackson Ozburn made a penalty kick save and Santa Clara men’s soccer played a man down for the majority of the game to scrape to a 1-all draw against San Francisco in a West Coast Conference match on Wednesday night at Stevens Stadium. Santa Clara played with 10 players after Moises Almontes was issued a straight red card in the seventh minute as the Broncos withstood a 29-shot barrage from the Dons. The PK save by Ozburn was one of eight he turned back to set a career-high.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
With a man advantage, San Francisco (4-4-3, 0-0-2 WCC) peppered the Santa Clara (3-5-2, 0-0-2 WCC) defense with 12 shots in the first half and 17 more in the second half. Ten of the shots were on frame but the Bronco defense kept absorbing the pressure.
The Dons got on the board in the 18th minute when they were awarded with their first of two penalty kicks in the game. David Raphael converted the PK rolling it to the right as Ozburn went the other way, for his WCC leading seventh goal of the season.
The Broncos answered on a header by Bradley Roberson in the 30th minute off assists from Will Wiersdorf and Yu Yokokawa for the freshman’s first career goal. The goal also marked the first time the Broncos scored in the opening half this season.
San Francisco generated a late first-half push with six shots and two corners after the equalizer, but the Broncos kept it 1-1 behind a team save and an Ozburn save in the 43rd minute.
The game nearly turned in favor of USF when they were awarded a second penalty kick in the 69th minute. Raphael once again took the shot but this time, Ozburn made a diving shot going to his right to keep the game level at 1-all.
The visitors continued to create chances late, with Ozburn adding saves on shots in the 75th, 77th, 80th, and 88th minutes. Jackson Blake put the Broncos’ last shot on frame in the 87th minute, but Lucas Jones saved it, and the match finished 1-1.
NOTABLE NUMBERS / GAME NOTES:
Santa Clara trails the series 29-39-12.
Raphael and Brayden Beason each finished with game-high six shots. Three of them were on frame for Raphael while two were on target for Beason.
Roberson had a team-high two shots for the Broncos.
