LONG BEACH – The Long Beach Poly girls volleyball team continues to have success in the Moore League.
The Jackrabbits swept Wilson in three sets, 25-16, 25-14, 25-10, Wednesday afternoon and extended their league winning streak to 29 games.
It was a lopsided contest that was led by Long Beach Poly sisters Ellie and McKennah Iamaleava.
“Every day we’re coming to work hard in practice because our league, they’re all pretty good,” junior Ellie Iamaleava said. “So, you know, we have to be prepared and we’re not letting any of the records have us play down.”
The Jackrabbits (17-6, 5-0) entered the contest with their league winning streak at 28 games. Their last league loss was to Wilson in October of 2023.
“It’s super important,” Poly head coach Gerald Aquiningoc said about the streak’s importance to the players. “I came in with them. This is my fourth year, so when we came in, we had goals and each year we pushed the program forward.”
This was Poly’s second straight sweep in league, as it beat Lakewood in three sets Tuesday.
“They didn’t really start paying attention to the streak until last season and then this was a big thing for them this year,” Aquiningoc said. “I love that they are able to set small goals that continue to challenge them.”
The Jackrabbits jumped to an early lead in the first set against Wilson (10-16, 3-3).
A kill by Aleeya Salima gave Poly a seven-point advantage, 9-2. The Bruins fought their way through the set but never got closer than seven points. Kills from senor McKennah Iamaleava and Alison Wetteland closed out the first set, 25-16.
“We always have to be prepared, specifically towards the end of the game,” said McKennah Iamaleava, a UC Irvine commit who was the Press Telegram’s girls volleyball player of the year last season.
Poly continued to dominate in the second and third sets. The Bruins never led throughout those games.
A lot of Wilson’s mistakes, according to head coach Gersain Pineda, came from the pressure to perform against their rival.
“I know the Wilson-Long Beach Poly rivalry is very strong,” Pineda said. “I think a lot of students come in here, especially ours, like scared. Of course, (Poly’s) a stronger team so mistakes will happen. I think we just fell into the whole chaos.”
Poly won the second and third sets, outscoring the Bruins with a combined score of 50-24.
The Jackrabbits limited Wilson to 10 points in the third set.
The two rivals will meet again Tuesday, Oct. 6, at Wilson.
