Sacramento County sex offender was arrested for a parole violation involving rubbing alcohol and medication

Kurtis MingSACRAMENTO COUNTY, Calif. —

A registered sex offender on parole was arrested last week after detectives found rubbing alcohol and over-the-counter medication in his Sacramento County apartment—items authorities said violated the conditions of his parole.

Sacramento County Sheriff Jim Cooper said he was unhappy to recently learn that Lloyd Edwards, 47, was living in his county. Edwards was released on parole four years ago after serving more than 20 years in prison for violent sex crimes. He had been sentenced to three life terms plus 51 years.

Cooper said that after recently learning Edwards was living in Gold River, he sent detectives to search Edwards’ apartment. The sheriff announced last week that Edwards had been arrested for possessing prohibited substances.

Since Friday, Cooper and his office have repeatedly told KCRA 3 they did not know what substances were found, despite the sheriff’s office being the arresting agency.

State corrections officials have now confirmed to KCRA 3 that detectives found rubbing alcohol and over-the-counter medication. Officials said the items violated Edwards’ parole conditions and that he was referred to Alcoholics Anonymous. Edwards was released Monday from the Sacramento County Jail.

He was originally sentenced for sex crimes committed in Butte County in 2000, when he was 21. Changes in state law allowed him to seek parole after serving 20 years.

Cooper said he believes Edwards should have served his full sentence.
