A shelter-in-place was issued Thursday morning after two underground vaults erupted in downtown San Francisco, according to the San Francisco Fire Department.
Firefighters responded around 6:04 a.m. to the 100 to 200 block of California Street following reports of smoke coming from several street-side underground vaults.
Two vaults within the affected area later experienced eruptions that were isolated to the vaults, SFFD said.
A unified command has been established with the San Francisco Police Department, SFFD and PG&E. The immediate area has been evacuated and the surrounding area has been cordoned off.
PG&E is shutting down additional power, which is expected to affect more locations in the area. A power outage is already associated with the incident.
As a precaution, a shelter-in-place remains in effect for the 100 to 200 blocks of California and Front streets.
No injuries have been reported.
The San Francisco Fire Department has a heavy presence at the scene. People are being asked to avoid the area and follow instructions from public safety officials.
