Filipino Heritage Month

October is Filipino American History Month, aka Filipino Heritage Month, and a few special events are coming up to celebrate!

Historic Filipinotown—Woon and Loqui are hosting a sideWOK event on Friday, Oct. 2, from 5 to 9 p.m., with wok-fried carne asada, slushie shochu margaritas, a complimentary fruit cart and a mariachi band. 

Silver Lake/Historic Filipinotown—Manila Inasal is hosting a special French-Pinoy dining event on Sunday, Oct. 4, featuring a Filipino and French charcuterie board, a five-course dinner and dessert menu and a curated wine selection from Buvons Wine. 

Fall flavors brew

Boyle Heights—It’s officially fall and, despite the heat, there are many cafes brewing fall favorites across Boyle Heights. Boyle Heights Beat has a full list of cafes offering fall beverages, like Cafe Niña’s ghost design lattes, AcurrĂşcame CafĂ©’s Franken-Berry Latte and Beetlejuice matcha and Cafe Cafe Mobile Coffee’s butternut squash latte.

Actor plans cafe, gallery?

Silver Lake—Cortado LA is coming to Silver Lake Drive. The pop-up concept by actor Jhon Mejía seems to be a gallery and cafe space, but no word on an official opening date just yet.

More happenings

Frogtown—Frogtown First Fridays is back on Oct. 2 with live music and specials along the L.A. River starting at 5 p.m. 

Silver Lake—Red Lion Tavern’s Steinholding contest returns this month, with tournaments each Wednesday at 7 p.m. and Saturday at 3 p.m. Winners get free beer and merch — and bragging rights. 

Glassell Park—Bub & Grandma’s Nights are moving to weekends starting Saturday, Oct. 3. They’ll still have live jazz on Sundays and dinner and drinks both evenings.

Echo Park, Highland Park—Triple Beam Pizza is starting a Sports Special on Sundays 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Mondays and Thursdays 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Select half pizzas will range from $10 to $15, with an option to add a salad for $10. 

Silver Lake—Tacos Royale is staying open with longer hours starting this week. They’ll be open Thursday and Friday from 1 to 11 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m.

Echo Park—Tijuanero by Tijuanazo opened in the former Los Burritos spot on Sunset Boulevard on Sept. 24. The venture is led by the Aria Esquival, daughter of the original Tijuana taco cart founders Antonio and Claudia and feels like a homecoming, as Antonio grew up in the area. Eagle Rock—Zero Fox LA celebrated its grand opening on Sept. 26, with a full feature in Eater LA about the sleek new spot for brunch, burgers and more.
