A man was hospitalized Thursday evening after a shooting involving a Culver City bus near South Centinela and Mitchell avenues, and police were still searching for the shooter as of 6:30 pm.
The Los Angeles Police Department said the shooting happened at about 5:15 pm near the intersection of South Centinela and Mitchell avenues. The victim is a man in his 40s and died at the hospital.
Police have not publicly identified the victim. Witnesses at the scene told the Daily Press the man shot was the bus driver.
Katty and her daughter Isabella, who live on the intersection, said they were inside their home when they heard what sounded like gunshots. Isabella heard the gunshots before her mom did.
“I told her I heard gunshots, but then I didn’t hear anything else,” Isabella said. She said she first assumed the noise was someone going through the trash.
When they went outside a few minutes later, they said they saw passengers running from the bus and firefighters attending to the driver. Katty spoke to a woman on the bus and was told an unidentified man had shot the driver three times.
Katty saw the driver taken off the bus and said he was convulsing on the gurney. Police have not confirmed the nature or extent of his injuries.
“I couldn’t even believe it. When I heard the gunshots, I was in disbelief. Like, it can’t be that. This is a quiet neighborhood,” Katty said.
The women said the intersection has seen many car crashes, but nothing like Thursday’s shooting. They did not see the shooter flee the scene.
No arrest had been announced as of 6:30 pm.
Police have not released a motive or a detailed suspect description.
