A former San Jose Police Department officer will spend five years in prison for possession of child pornography, prosecutors announced Friday.
Gilroy resident Denis Shevchenko was convicted of possession of child porn last October, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office.
Shevchenko, 45, was employed as a non-sworn SJPD community service officer at the time of his arrest, prosecutors said. He served as a San Jose police officer from September 2012 to August 2013 and an officer with the Pinole Police Department from December 2013 to April 2014, according to state employment records.
The sentence comes five years after San Jose police arrested Shevchenko after finding numerous videos and thousands of sexually-explicit images of minors in his home.
Prosecutors said the child porn located during an Oct. 14, 2021 search included depictions of babies and toddlers engaging in sexual conduct with adults.
SJPD opened an investigation into Shevchenko after the FBI alerted police to threatening social media posts on his account, according to court documents. Prosecutors said Shevchenko had posted violent messages online advocating for “shooting” police officers and “culling” people who didn’t share his political beliefs.
In addition to the five-year prison term, U.S. District Judge Edward J. Davila ordered Shevchenko to pay $47,000 in restitution to the victims, prosecutors said.
He is expected to report to prison on Oct. 29, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office.
