FRESNO COUNTY, Calif. (FOX26) — The Fresno County Sheriff’s Department wants to warn the community of a scam email.
The Sheriff’s Office was informed by multiple third-party vendors that they received fraudulent emails impersonating County employees in several departments.
The scam emails contained publicly available County contract information, included attachments, and directed recipients to submit a payment through a Square payment link.
The messages originated from a similar-looking domain, @fresnocounty-ca.us, rather than official County email addresses.
The fresnocounty-ca.us domain is not a legitimate County email domain.
The list of correct domains includes
@fresnocountyca.gov@fresnosheriff.org@fresnolibrary.org @fcera.gov
No evidence has been found of compromised County email or payment accounts, systems, or data.
The known activity appears limited to external vendors receiving impersonation and payment-fraud messages.
Most County departments do not send payment links or solicit money in emails to residents.
