BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – The Cal State Bakersfield volleyball team opened its Big West home slate with a sweep Friday night, defeating Cal State Fullerton, 3-0 (27-25, 25-19, 25-23). The `Runners battled through a tight opening set before taking control of the final two sets to secure the victory.
Key Facts
Suelen Lima led the `Runners with 10 kills, three blocks and 12.5 points.
Anna Bacchin finished with eight kills, six digs, one ace and 9.5 points.
Jordyn Waite-Ward recorded seven kills, three blocks and two service aces for 11 points.
Leylah Duran hit .500 with seven kills and no attack errors.
Samantha Capinpin recorded a double-double with 13 assists and 10 digs.
CSUB hit .208 as a team while holding Fullerton to a .123 hitting percentage.
How it Happened
The `Runners and Titans battled through a back-and-forth opening set, with 17 ties and seven lead changes. CSUB eventually broke through late, scoring the final three points to take the first set, 27-25. Waite-Ward put CSUB ahead 26-25 before Lima closed out the set with a service ace.
CSUB carried that momentum into the second set, jumping out to an early lead and eventually taking a 25-19 victory. The `Runners used a balanced attack in the set, recording 15 kills while hitting .294.
The `Runners continued to hold the advantage in the third set, building a 24-16 lead before Fullerton rallied to make it 24-19. CSUB held off the comeback, however, with Fullerton eventually cutting the deficit to one at 24-23 before Da Cruz finished the match with a kill to complete the sweep.
CSUB finished the night with 44 kills, 37 assists, five aces, 46 digs and eight total blocks, while limiting Fullerton to 32 kills and a .123 hitting percentage.
The match also marked the CSUB debut of Amyri Robinson, who recorded her first career kill as a `Runner in the third set.

The `Runners will close out the weekend against Long Beach State on Saturday, Oct. 3, at 2 p.m. at the Icardo Center.
