FreshCo Food Center plans to open its third grocery store in Fresno.

The locally owned supermarket is taking over a former Dollar General at the southeast corner of Ashlan Avenue and Fresno Street.

That store was home to a Gong’s Market years ago and a Foodplus, among other stores over the years. It’s been empty for a while.

The new FreshCo is expected to open in the spot by the end of the year or early next year, said AK Mohsin, the owner’s son.

FreshCo has two other locations in town. One is at Shields and Brawley avenues in a former Save Mart. It serves Latino and Indian customers. The other store, at First Street and Olive Avenue, serves Latino and Asian customers.

The stores opened with the intention of serving Latin American foods, but found the people in the neighborhood wanted a more diverse assortment, Mohsin said.

“Once you’re open, you learn who your community is, and you adjust,” he said. “FreshCo will serve the community around it, whatever that community is.”

The Ashlan location will serve Hispanic customers and whoever else in the neighborhood becomes part of its customer base, he said.

The former Golden Bowl

The Olive Avenue store recently expanded its offerings too.

It used to be Golden Bowl Super Market before the current family bought the store in 2021. It has a huge produce department with a wide selection of Asian vegetables and an outdoor plants section.

FreshCo recently opened its meat department and kitchen. In addition to chorizo and steaks, it sells beef tongue, oxtails and more.

A prepared foods section now sells hot chow mein, fried rice, chicken legs and more.

Even though the store has been operating under the FreshCo name for five years, it’s planning a grand opening now that the new sections are open. It will likely happen later this year, Mohsin said.
