Kenneth Byron Muehleman
OBITUARY
It is with great sadness that we share the passing of Ken, 86, of Point Loma on August 4th surrounded by his family. Ken was born in Alton, Illinois and spent summers on his grandparent’s farm where he was happy spending the days with his horse, Tip. He moved to San Diego in 1952. He met the love of his life, Bonnie, at Point Loma High School in his senior year. He called her to invite her to the homecoming dance with him and she thought the call was from another boy in her Civics class and said yes. When she opened the door on the night of the dance, she was surprised to see Ken standing there. They went to the dance and two days later were going steady.
Ken received his Bachelors of Science in Physics from San Diego State University in 1963. President John F. Kennedy attended his graduation in Aztec Bowl along with Bonnie and his son, Tom. He started his career at Cimron, Hughes Oceanside & Cubic and proceeded to work as an Engineer at many companies including Honeywell, General Dynamics, Lockheed Martin, and Northrup Grumman over the course of his 50+ years of work. A key thing in his early career was working on the first Everest and Jennings electronic wheelchair. He worked on dozens of projects over the years, was known as a key contact for many electronic systems, and helped with the launch of the long-endurance, high-altitude Global Hawk aircraft.
One of his passions was playing and coaching soccer. He coached all of his children’s soccer teams, his niece’s team, and even a team some of the neighbor children were on. He played himself for over 25 years on the R.A.T.S., Robb Athletic Touring Society. When he wasn’t on the field, he was scheduling games for leagues in the area.
He enjoyed visiting Palm Springs and Paso Robles on vacations with Bonnie. They were members of many wine clubs over the years and enjoyed attending holiday parties at the wineries. In later years, he was an avid San Diego State University Men’s Basketball fan with season tickets to cheer on his Mighty Aztec Men.
He will be dearly missed by his wife, Bonnie, of 65 years, his son Tom Muehleman, daughters Lisa (and Kevin) McDonnell and Erica (and Shawn) Lyons and grandchildren Matthew and Joshua Muehleman, Conner and Caris Lyons, and Jack McDonnell.
A Celebration of Life will be held at St. Peter’s by the Sea Lutheran Church, 1371 Sunset Cliffs Blvd, San Diego, 92107 on October 24, 2026, at 1:00 p.m.
