Three Sacramento County sheriff’s deputies shot and killed a man Sunday in Arden Arcade after authorities said he reached toward a handgun while deputies tried to detain him behind a business.

Deputies were called about 11 a.m. to the 4300 block of Marconi Avenue near a car wash. They found the man sleeping nearby, behind an Eastern Avenue liquor store, with a handgun on his lap, said Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Sgt. Edward Igoe.

The caller told authorities she believed the man was the same person who had shot at her and her boyfriend the previous night, Igoe said. Investigators had not confirmed whether the man was connected to that shooting.

Deputies arrived and found the man still asleep with a handgun on his lap, Igoe said. They waited for additional deputies to arrive before trying to wake him from a distance by sounding a car horn.

Deputies directed the man not to move toward the gun and told him to stand up so they could safely detain him, Igoe said.

At one point, the man picked up the handgun and placed it on the ground next to him, Igoe said.

“They continued to try to give him commands and directives to come back peacefully, however, he failed to follow directives, turning toward the deputies and reaching down,” Igoe said.

Three deputies then opened fire, striking the man. Deputies immediately provided medical aid before he was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead, Igoe said.

In a news release, the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office said the man’s loaded handgun was recovered by deputies.

The man’s identity was expected to be released by the Sacramento County Coroner’s Office in the coming days.

Three deputies were placed on administrative leave, as is standard following an officer-involved shooting.

The Sheriff’s Office Homicide Bureau and Professional Standards Division will investigate the deputy-involved shooting. Homicide detectives and crime scene investigators are also looking into if the man was connected to the shooting reported the previous night.

The Sacramento County District Attorney’s Office will conduct an independent review of the deputy-involved shooting.

Igoe described the encounter as a worst-case scenario for everyone involved.

“It is a dangerous situation and a very volatile situation when you have a suspect who, again, is reported to have fired at an individual just the previous night, now located with a firearm,” he said. “It doesn’t get scarier than that.”
