Long Beach came together this weekend to celebrate the contributions the Latino community has made to the city.

The Long Beach Latino Cultural Center, managed by local nonprofit Centro CHA, hosted the fourth annual Hispanic Heritage Celebration on Saturday, Oct. 3, at Cesar Chavez Park.

The celebration coincided with National Hispanic Heritage Month, which is observed from Sept. 15 to Oct. 15, and celebrates the histories, cultures and contributions of Americans whose ancestors came from Mexico, the Caribbean, Central and South America, and Spain.

About 44% of Long Beach’s population is part of the Hispanic/Latino community, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.

The celebration featured live music, folklorico, mariachi, food, art, lowriders, community resources and more. There were performances by Soto Band – which played Latin, funk and R&B hits – and Miriah Avila, a retro soul artist, as well as performances by Danza Yoliztly, Oropexa Folklorico, and Marachi Los Santaneros.

Attendees also had an opportunity to help choose the logo for the Long Beach Latino Cultural Center, which is located at the Jenny Oropeza Community Center.
