Sacramento County has opened weather respite centers this week to provide relief as the region experiences potentially record-breaking October heat.
The centers now open in Sacramento County include the First Step Communities Shelter on North A Street, the Outreach & Engagement Center on Auburn Boulevard, and the Navigation Center on North Fifth Street. These locations offer residents a cool, safe space to escape the heat, charge their devices, use restrooms, and receive a meal.
The California Department of Public Health (CDPH) has shared extreme heat safety reminders for everyone. They recommend staying cool, especially during the hottest times of the day, by visiting public libraries or shopping malls if air conditioning is unavailable, avoiding physical exertion or exercising outdoors, and wearing lightweight, light-colored, loose clothing, hats, sunglasses, and sunscreen.
CDPH also advises staying hydrated by drinking plenty of fluids, especially water, even when not thirsty, and choosing low-sugar, non-alcoholic drinks. Additionally, they encourage people to check in on those at high risk of heat-related illness, use a buddy system when working in the heat, and stay informed by monitoring accurate weather forecasts and extreme heat alerts.
According to CDPH data, heat-related illnesses result in approximately 5,000 emergency room visits and 60 deaths each year.
