A Reader Asks: What’s going on at the 2 and 5 freeway interchange?
Elysian Valley—Reader David W. wondered why the right lane of the connector road from the northbound 5 Freeway to the southbound 2 Freeway has been closed. Caltrans spokesperson Colleen Park says the closure is part of a project to seismically retrofit the connector’s bridge and tunnel. Construction on the $15.9 million project will continue until summer or fall 2027 and rehabilitate nearly 52,000 square feet of the bridge and tunnel, and replace 3,200 feet of metal-beam guardrail. 100th birthday party for Shakespeare Bridge
Los Feliz—The Shakespeare Bridge turns 100 this year, and there’s a party this Saturday, Oct. 10. The 262-foot-long Gothic-influenced span was originally meant to extend Franklin Avenue over a 35-foot-deep ravine—to an eastern hill that didn’t even have much housing yet. It’s now a neighborhood landmark. L.A. Times
