OAKLAND — Two men were shot at their East Oakland home early Monday and a roommate of about a week was arrested after a standoff with police, authorities said.

Both wounded men — cousins, authorities said, one 29 and the other 33 — were in stable condition at a hospital.

The shooting happened about 2:01 a.m. Monday inside a residence in the 3200 block of Lynde Street, a residential area in the Patten district.

According to initial police reports, the two wounded men had invited the suspect, a 56-year-old man, to live with them about a week ago.

The three got into a dispute that turned into a physical altercation, which ended with the 56-year-old man allegedly shooting the other two, according to the reports. Police have not said what the dispute was about.

The wounded men were able to get out of the home on their own and call police.

When officers responded, the suspect refused to come out. Additional officers, including members of the SWAT team,  responded and negotiations with the suspect began. He surrendered about 5:30 a.m.

He was arrested on suspicion of assault with a firearm.
