DALLAS — The San Jose Sharks visit the Dallas Stars at American Airlines Arena.

It’s the Sharks’ first road game this season, but they’ll be without captain Macklin Celebrini, who’s a late scratch with a lower-body injury.

Period 1

Celebrini also appeared to practice in full this morning during morning skate, though I didn’t watch all of morning skate

Toffoli penalty: Everyone focuses on Celebrini’s offense, but losing his ability to kill plays and win puck battles is as huge a loss. Sharks have been chasing all game, and an obvious-looking Toffoli hooking penalty a result of it.

Heiskanen goal: San Jose Sharks have been scuffling all night, down 9-2 shots. They actually have some OZ possession, Smith had sprung Wennberg with a gorgeous NZ diagonal pass — a dangerous one, but it worked — and Marchment gave it low to high. But Orlov coming down from the point, one move too many, he’s stripped by Heiskanen. Askarov made the initial save, but couldn’t find the puck. Heiskanen tossed it from behind the net and off Askarov’s skate. Not Orlov’s best shift and a tough way to end a period that should’ve probably ended scoreless.

San Jose Sharks down 11-2 shots, look a little stunned without Celebrini. They’ll need to figure it out or it’s going to be a long night for Askarov, who’s been their saving grace so far. Per Natural Stat Trick, Sharks down 5-on-5 29-7 Shot Attempts lol.

Period 2

2 in: Orlov misses the hope stretch pass, Sharks can’t get it out. He’s really trying to do too much tonight.

Kiviranta goal: What a mess. I think Stenberg should’ve adjusted and covered Back, the San Jose Sharks had doubled up accidentally on D down low when Trouba and I think Chernyshov got caught on the same guy. In the chaos, another shots from below the goal line, off Askarov’s foot. Odd way to give up two goals.

New #SJSharks lines in second period, D-pairings look the same:

Sherwood-Wennberg-Toffoli
Marchment-Dellandrea-Smith
Chernyshov-Misa-Stenberg
Goodrow-Ostapchuk-Graf

4 in: Misa has a sliver of time and space in OZ, but forces a low to high pass, intercepted. Easy to say from up top, but thought he had space to go lower into zone.

Benn goal: This one, I think Askarov has to be tighter on the post. Another bang-bang play around the goal line, a pass from below that to Benn, who forces it in.

7 in: San Jose Sharks show a heartbeat, Orlov hits Wennberg in stride with pass, Wennberg able to shovel it toward open net and Toffoli, who’s robbed by Oettinger.

Sharks follow with a power play, though nothing doing. PP1: Cagnoni-Marchment-Smith-Chernyshov-Wennberg, PP2: Orlov-Sherwood-Misa-Stenberg-Toffoli.

8 left: Sherwood with back-to-back steals high on PK, one led to a missed shot. That might be first positive San Jose Sharks thing I’ve written so far tonight.

5 left: Wennberg had a moment with the puck along OZ wall, Marchment and Smith moving, but Bichsel just erased him. Sharks need someone to make plays.

Robertson goal: Want a stop from Askarov there? But it’s also Robertson. Just one on one, lasers it past Askarov. But mainly, Dickinson has got to get that out. His rainbow clear/lob pass batted down by Robertson.

1 left: Just an ugly night. Not any one person’s fault. But Kesselring had picked up puck off Dallas shot rebound, plenty of time and space, Smith wide open in front of him, I mean routine as routine can be, minimal pressure, and Kesselring misses the pass. Kesselring looks up at the sky afterwards. Not picking on anybody, just emblematic of the night. The San Jose Sharks have been really bad, they’re not this bad, even without Celebrini. Can’t say anyone has stepped up.

Period 3

Bichsel penalty: San Jose Sharks have had a couple effective forecheck shifts to start this period. They’ll need more of that if Celebrini out a while.

5 in: Ostapchuk just misses Graf for what could’ve been an open netter. Not great, but again, Sharks showing at least a little offensive spark now.

6 in: Dickinson in DZ corner, has a little time and space, but Hyry bearing down, takes too long, loses it. That’s a play where you want to see a better Dickinson one day. For what it’s worth, toolsy Simon Edvinsson, all over the rumor mill now, took a while to get there too, spent most of two years in the AHL, before full time in Detroit.

Orlov penalty: Looks like Graf-Dellandrea leading PK, and Dellandrea taking the initial draws.

9 in: Smith and Dellandrea 2-on-1, Smith rang the crossbar.

Rantanen goal: What a shot. San Jose Sharks serving as slump-busters for a Stars team that had scored just one goal in their first two games.
