The latest book by New York Times bestselling author Dr. JaNay Brown-Wood continues her mission to inspire young readers and foster a love for storytelling.
Brown-Wood is based in the Sacramento region, and on the day of the release of her 34th children’s book, “Amara Visits the Library,” she joined California Tonight Host Edie Lambert to talk about her latest work.
“It’s a labor of love to write a book and each time a new one comes out it’s a time to celebrate,” explained Brown-Wood.
She says, “Amara Visits the Library” is the first book in her new series called “Where in the Neighborhood.” She dedicated it to several librarians at the Sacramento Public Library.
“I feel like it’s such a great place for children to know and to go to, and so this book encourages kids to visit the library,” Brown-Wood said.
Brown-Wood also shared that she hated reading as a child, despite now holding a Ph.D. in education and being a prolific author. She discussed why she didn’t gravitate toward books when she was younger and what ultimately changed her perspective.
“I really think it has to do with not being able to find books that reminded me of myself or my experience or my family,” said Brown-Wood. “None of the books that were out there captivated me enough to pull me into story.”
She says that’s why she now writes diverse books with a goal of helping more children see stories that reflect their experiences.
The author also spoke about her “Jammies with JaNay” program, which gives parents tips on how to build a bedtime routine that inspires a love of reading. They include:
Invite them to participate.Point out the words.Ask questions.Talk about the pictures.Read the book multiple times.Have fun!
