ROCHESTER, Mich. – The Oakland University Esports program officially kicked off its 2026-27 competitive season on Monday evening, battling through a hard-fought opening Overwatch contest against Kennesaw State in the National Association of Collegiate Esports (NACE) Union 10 Division.

“Opening night always brings high intensity, and Kennesaw State gave us a great battle across every map. While the final scoreline wasn’t the outcome we worked toward, we saw a lot of positive takeaways and high-level execution in key moments,” said head coach Carl Leone. “We are actively working through several roster changes, and it will take some time to develop strong team synergy, but tonight provided a clear view of our foundation as we settle into conference play.”

The Golden Grizzlies dropped a competitive 3-1 decision to the Owls, trading blows across four tightly contested maps to open the fall campaign. Despite the setback, Oakland demonstrated strong mechanical execution and strategic resilience as the roster integrated new lineups in live conference action.

With the opening round in the books, the Golden Grizzlies enter the 2026-27 season with high expectations across Smash and Overwatch. Building on the program’s foundation, Oakland returns experienced leadership alongside emerging talent such as Amos Hassell, Frankie Priest, and Austin Malega, all prepared to contend throughout conference and national tournament slates this fall.

The Overwatch team quickly turns its focus to offline competition this weekend as the squad travels to Cincinnati to compete in the Queen City Clash Invitational at the University of Cincinnati. Following the tournament, Oakland returns to official collegiate competition on Monday, October 12, for Swiss Round 1 action at 8:30 PM EST.
