SAN JOSE, Calif. (Oct. 3, 2026) – The Wyoming Cowgirls picked up their first win of Mountain West play Saturday behind the strength of an impressive sweep on the road at San Jose State. The Cowgirls controlled the match on their way to a 25-23, 25-20 and 25-18 victory.
Set one was a battle throughout, but unlike in Thursday night’s loss at San Jose State, Wyoming (8-7, 1-3 MW) played much better in the late stages of Saturday’s first set. UW closed the first outscoring the Spartans 4-2 to secure the opening set.
The second set once again began as a back-and-forth battle, but a 6-1 run from the Cowgirls turned a 9-9 tie into a 16-10 advantage. From there, Wyoming controlled much of the rest of the second. The third and final set was relatively dominated by the Cowgirls, as they turned a 6-6 tie early on, into a 15-8 lead at the technical timeout. The Spartans would get to within three later in the set, but Wyoming slammed the door shut after that, closing the match with the final four points.
Wyoming hit .327 in the sweep while holding SJSU to a .227 clip. Which ended up being the difference in the match, along with the service game. The Cowgirls had one fewer ace, 8-7, than the Spartans, but committed just seven serving errors to San Jose State’s 11. Both teams had five total blocks in the contest.
Peyton Carruth led the Brown & Gold at the service line by tying a career-high with four aces. Addy Thorington added a pair while Ann Melgren had the other ace for the Cowgirls. Thorington was also second on the team with three total blocks in the sweep.
Offensively, Paige Lauterwasser had a big day to pace UW. Lauterwasser led the way with 13 kills while hitting .370. Rylee Heinz and Emma Winter added eight kills apiece, and hit .467 and .412, respectively. Heinz also led the Cowgirls with four block assists on the day.
Maddy Stucky recorded her second double-double of the season as she led Wyoming with 12 digs and also had 12 assists. Sara Quigley led UW with 18 assists. Carruth chipped in with eight digs and also had a kill.
Next up for the Cowgirls, will be a home-and-road split next week against Air Force. Wyoming will host the Falcons Thursday, October 8 at 6 p.m., before traveling to Colorado Springs for a 2 p.m., contest Saturday the 10th.
