A major bridge rehabilitation project along one of Sacramento’s busiest freeway corridors is being celebrated Wednesday after years of construction.
Caltrans and state and local leaders are holding a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the American River Bridge Rehabilitation Project along State Route 51, also known as the Capital City Freeway or Business 80.
The project rehabilitated the bridge deck, reinforced the bridge’s piers and added a new bicycle and pedestrian path across the American River with safety barriers.
The new bike and pedestrian path also connects with the existing American River trail system.
Caltrans District 3 Director Sergio Aceves said, “This is a game changer for Sacramento and will encourage more people to get around using this new path without their cars.”
Caltrans said the work is designed to extend the life of the bridge and protect it from erosion. It also provides vital connections between downtown Sacramento and communities to the east.
Wednesday’s ribbon-cutting ceremony is scheduled for 10 a.m. near Cal Expo. Besides Caltrans, speakers include Kevin McCarty and State Sen. Roger Niello.
