Gov. Gavin Newsom swore in the 2026-2027 California Service Corps cohort during a ceremony in Sacramento on Wednesday morning, marking the final swearing-in for the program under his administration.

The governor praised the Service Corps, emphasizing the importance of its members’ work. He said their enthusiasm fuels him when the work starts to feel too disheartening.

“You’re the answer to all that, the antidote to all that cynicism and fear and anxiety,” Newsom said.

The California Service Corps is made up of four programs: AmeriCorps California, College Corps, California Climate Action Corps, and the Youth Service Corps. The 2026-2027 cohort is made up of more than 10,000 members.

Kenni Diaz Lopez, a Sacramento State student and College Corps fellow, shared her thoughts on the event with KCRA 3.

“It proves to the world, when we come together as one, our voice is louder,” she said. “It’s just great to see everyone celebrate one more cohort together.”

Newsom thanked both current and past Service Corps members for their contributions to the state, calling the program a “manifestation” of something better.

“You can’t legislate spirit. You can’t legislate pride,” he said. “There’s no bill number. We’re going to legislate happiness. It doesn’t happen. It happens because people make it happen. That spirit and the pride is reflected in this room and the work you do every single day.”
