FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) — The Big Fresno Fair is back, kicking off with a celebration of Fresno’s best and brightest.

Fresno leaders recognized several local students for their agricultural achievements during the fair’s opening ceremony on Wednesday.

One of them was Neela Lopez, president of the Reedley FFA chapter.

Lopez says she is an aspiring veterinarian, and the fair gives her the perfect hands-on experience.

“Before this, I didn’t know anything about farm animals,” she said. “Going through FFA, it definitely helps me learn the skills of how to nurture them, care for them, and what they need to be successful.”

Fresno County Farm Bureau CEO Ryan Jacobsen says honoring the hard work of students like Neela is crucial for the continued success of the region’s agricultural industry.

“They do an incredible job of showing their animals and really getting to be a part of something that’s been around for such a long time. But every generation brings something new to it,” Jacobsen said. “It’s such an important part for agriculture, because we’re celebrating the heritage, but also the future.”

But that’s just a small part of the Big Fresno Fair.

You’ll be able to enjoy everything from fair food to fun concerts, and so much more — all while keeping dollars at home and supporting your neighbors.

“It generates an incredible economic stimulus to the community here – over $77 million,” said Fresno Mayor Jerry Dyer. “But it’s beyond the attendance. It’s beyond the financial contribution. It’s about families making memories here at the Big Fresno Fair.”

The fair runs from now through October 18.
