ALAMEDA – A suspect is in custody following a two-alarm fire at an apartment complex Wednesday morning in Alameda, police said.
The Alameda Police Department identified the suspect as a 52-year-old Alameda resident. The person was arrested on suspicion of arson and committing a felony while on release for a previous case.
The fire broke out around 4:45 a.m. at an apartment complex in the 400 block of Central Avenue.
Police said officers and firefighters arrived to find heavy fire coming from a first-floor unit. The flames were spreading to adjacent units and trapping residents on the upper floors.
Two residents suffered injuries, including one who jumped from a third-floor unit to escape the flames.
Half of the apartment complex’s 12 units sustained significant damage, according to Alameda fire officials. The fire displaced at least a dozen residents, including the two who were injured. The American Red Cross is providing assistance to the residents.
The Alameda police and fire departments are investigating the exact cause of the fire.
