COMMERCE, Calif. (KABC) — A driver is dead after a Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputy set off a deadly chain-reaction crash in the City of Commerce while rushing to another emergency overnight.
The deputy was responding to a call about an unconscious person in the road in Cudahy when they crashed into a car, killing the civilian driver inside. That driver’s car then hit a third vehicle during the chain reaction.
The crash happened around 1:30 a.m. on Thursday on S. Atlantic Boulevard at Sheila Street.
The driver of the car hit by the deputy was pronounced dead at the scene. The deputy was taken to the hospital with minor injuries, and the driver in the other vehicle was not hurt, investigators said.
The sheriff’s department said the deputy’s lights and sirens were on as they responded to the call.
