LONG BEACH — Wilson quarterbacks Logan Trafas and Jacob Powell are in a rare position heading into a Moore League showdown against Long Beach Poly at Cabrillo High on Saturday night.

It will be both players’ first time playing against Poly and Powell’s second-ever game in a Wilson uniform.

Trafas, a senior first-year starter, and Powell, a sophomore reserve who transferred from Servite, both know they’ll see action after coach Raudric Curtis successfully used a two-quarterback system in a 35-8 win over Jordan in a Moore League opener last week.

Trafas completed 8 of 11 passes for 119 yards and one touchdown against Jordan. He also scored a rushing touchdown.

“It’s really awesome,” Trafas said. “Just learning from one another and keep pushing each other. Learning from one another, we can be our best selves and really become the best player that we can be.”

“We celebrate the highs and when we’re on our lows, we pick each other up,” Trafas added.

Powell completed 8 of 10 passes for 112 yards and two touchdowns.

“I think it’s amazing that me and Logan can go out on the field and execute with our strengths and lead this team to victory,” Powell said.

Curtis said both players are uniquely dynamic.

“I like the dynamic nature of two quarterbacks where they each stress you in their own ways,” Curtis said. “I think their play and their attitude towards both playing really complement each other.

“It lifts our team and we can stress defenses with two approaches so defenses have to respect Logan’s legs. He can still beat you with his arm. They have to respect the way that Jacob can stretch the field horizontally and vertically with his arm and his decision-making, and his touch being able to throw some of those touch balls.

“I think if you’re a DC (defensive coordinator), you have to occupy your time with what this quarterback can do and what this quarterback can do. So I love that as a head coach, knowing that we’re putting pressure on the other side with our two quarterbacks.”

Wilson is the defending Moore League champion. It defeated beating Poly 22-21 with a last-minute 2-point conversion last season.

Curtis said he hopes to apply the lessons learned.

“How important the little things are,” Curtis continued. “There’s no detail that is insignificant for us. The way we line up. The pre-snap communication. The way we take coaching on the sideline and get to the hot bench. Those are all things that we take very seriously.

“We simulate. We spend a lot of attention to make sure our operations are strong.”

Curtis said everything comes down to those margins, including managing emotions, in an important rivalry game.

“We educate them on the zone of optimal performance,” Curtis explained.

The Bruins, who are 2-5 overall and 1-0 in Moore League play, lost their first five games of the season.

“Those games really set us up to be better players,” Trafas said, “to learn from the competition at the Trinity League level and all those OC schools, really just made us better.”

Wilson applied those lessons and is now on a two-game win streak after beating Compton and Jordan by a combined margin of 76-15.

“For us, Poly week is like every other week,” Curtis said. “You have to get down to business every single day. Bring the energy, execute in practice, learn in practice and try to be the best team that we can be when we show up on Saturday.”

Curtis said his team needs to stay focused on getting better.

“There is no secret to being successful,” Curtis said. “There are models out there. We’re going to follow good football models.”
