Tropical Storm Rachel has brought high surf and flooding to Southern California, damaging coastal areas and prompting emergency measures. Residents scrambled to shore up their homes on Friday.

Wave after wave slammed into Long Beach’s Alamitos Peninsula, battering the already broken boardwalk and threatening homes left vulnerable by erosion caused by last month’s Hurricane Marie.

A local emergency was declared Friday in Newport Beach after high surf flooded streets along the Southern California coastline. Water covered about 10 blocks, reaching knee-high levels in some areas.

KCRA 3 meteorologist Kelly Curran said on Saturday morning that Rachel is still off the coast of the Baja Peninsula but is expected to make landfall Saturday night near Ensenada, Mexico then continue it’s way up Southern California.
