LONG BEACH — The Long Beach Poly football team wanted to show that last year’s rivalry game loss was an October aberration.
The Jackrabbits did that and more as they sought and found redemption with a 44-0 victory against Wilson in a Moore League game at Cabrillo High Saturday night.
Poly improved to 4-4 overall and 2-0 in the Moore League. The Jackrabbits have outscored league opponents 99-0.
Senior running back Jeron Johnson II led the way with four touchdowns, including three rushing.
“We were overly focused,” said Johnson, who had 104 yards of total offense, including 80 rushing yards on six carries. “We had a chip on our shoulder. We had a rough preseason. People doubted us. We got our whole team back. We’re back as one. The unity was strong. I have to congratulate my coaches, my team, my line.”

The Jackrabbits led 15-0 at halftime after a 23-yard touchdown catch by junior receiver Zion Anderson and a nifty 14-yard touchdown catch by Johnson. Poly had 250 yards of total offense in the first half, including 165 passing yards.
Johnson’s final three carries of the game all went for touchdowns (28, 14, 22) in the second half.
“That’s just Jeron Johnson being Jeron Johnson,” Long Beach Poly first-year coach Travon Patterson said.
Long Beach Poly sophomore quarterback Trevor Scott completed 16 of 21 passes for 267 yards and two touchdowns in his second start. Scott also ran for 48 yards on six carries.
“He’s just being consistent,” Patterson continued. “He’s controlling the offense and making sure that everybody is doing what they’re supposed to do in the right spots and just executing the plays that we call, and we can’t ask for more than that.”
Poly senior receiver Jayden Coley finished with a team-high six receptions for 103 yards.
Meanwhile, Poly’s defense held Wilson to less than 100 yards of total offense.
“It means a lot,” Patterson continued, “when you can have a defense that’s stingy like that. We give credit to Wilson. They did a great job of driving the ball down the field and getting inside the red zone, where they were threatening to be able to put points on the board, but our defense played lights out.”
Poly will be off next week. The Jackrabbits will return to action in a road game against Millikan on Oct. 23.

Junior running back Jemel Grigsby accounted for all 82 total yards of Wilson’s offense. Wilson quarterbacks Logan Trafas and Jacob Powell combined for 3 completions on 13 passing attempts, 52 yards, and three interceptions.
“It’s going to be tough to beat a team like this with that many turnovers,” Wilson second-year coach Raudric Curtis said.
The Bruins (2-6, 1-1) will host rival Lakewood (2-5, 0-2) on Oct. 16.
Wilson put both quarterbacks, starter Trafas and reserve Powell, on the field at the same time early in the game.
However, a bad snap, fumbled by Powell and recovered by Grigsby, pushed the ball back from the Poly 13 to the Poly 38.
Poly’s personal foul moved the ball back to the 23 with 9:14 left in the first quarter.
Wilson went for it on fourth-and-goal from the Poly 9, but the Jackrabbits blew up the run play in the backfield to force a turnover on downs.
Poly capitalized with an 88-yard scoring drive, highlighted by a 23-yard touchdown pass from Scott to Anderson. The Jackrabbits led 7-0 with 2:59 left in the first.
Scott’s 35-yard run down the sidelines extended Poly’s second drive and set them up inside the red zone at the Wilson 12 to start the second quarter. The 6-foot-5 lefty’s14-yard touchdown pass bounced off junior receiver Kasim Shepherd’s hands before Johnson caught it, which made it 13-0 with 9:47 left in the second quarter. Poly successfully made a 2-point conversion to go up 15-0.
Trafas threw an interception, which was hauled in by Jackrabbits senior linebacker Dezmen Howard deep in Wilson’s territory at the Bruins 18.
Poly’s 44-yard field goal attempt was blocked and recovered by Wilson senior linebacker Kingston Meyer at the Poly 21 with 7:48 left in the second.
Meanwhile, Trafas was intercepted again, this time in the end zone by senior safety Toa Cagnolatti with 6:20 left in first half, which kept it 15-0 going into halftime.
Wilson’s defense stood tall early in the second half, stopping Poly from the 1-yard line three times to force a turnover on downs with 8:26 left in the third.
“I think battling with a team like this for as long as we battled definitely gave us some confidence, but we gotta get better,” Curtis continued.
Poly took advantage of Wilson’s poor field position, and Shepherd and Howard worked together to bring down Grigsby in the end zone for a safety. The Jackrabbits led 17-0.
Johnson’s 28-yard touchdown run extended it to 23-0 with 6:59 left in the third.
Powell’s interception, which was hauled in by Shepherd, gave Poly the ball back just outside the red zone.
Johnson’s 14-yard touchdown run pushed it to 30-0 with 5:13 left in the third.
Junior Landon Perkins’ 67-yard punt return for a touchdown made it 37-0 with 3:57 left in the third.
Wilson’s 26-yard field goal attempt was blocked early in the fourth quarter. The game finished with a running clock for the final nine minutes.
